Cedars-Sinai Employee May Have Stolen Patient IDs
Officials at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles say that as many as 1,000 patients may have had their personal information stolen by a former employee. The information was allegedly used in a scheme to defraud insurance companies, and may have resulted in erroneous payments to the employee of about $70,000.
Personal information was found last week in a search of the former employee's home. James Wilson, 44, had been employed by the medical center in the billing department, and was arrested November 6 in connection with the scheme. He pleaded not guilty to charges of insurance fraud, identity theft, grand theft and other charges. He is currently lodged in a Los Angeles County jail on $895,000 bail.
The medical center warned the affected patients in a letter sent last week. The District Attorney's office is continuing its investigation to determine the extent of the fraud and whether additional charges are warranted.
